Overview

S4 Energy Solutions, LLC (S4) is a recently formed venture combining Waste Management’s knowledge and expertise in waste handling, processing, and energy off-take with InEnTec’s PEM™ systems.  S4 will be the total solution in the markets it serves, providing an entire process, in which it will receive waste, process the waste in a highly responsible manner, and return energy products to the community in which it operates.
The company intends to design, build, own, operate, and license waste gasification facilities throughout the world.  Initially, it will focus development on facilities in specialized waste niche markets where demand for gasification is highest.  At the same time, S4 plans to validate and confirm commercial efficacy of plants, which will process MSW, and other general feedstocks. The company intends to deploy these facilities on a small, distributed model; to return energy products back to the markets served by the plants.

S4 will provide the full integration of a plant to its customers, which includes collection and initial processing of waste in preparation for feeding to the gasifier.  Upon conversion of the waste into synthesis gas (syngas), S4, with the help of its customers, will determine the most efficient, highest value energy product to generate.  Syngas can be used to make a variety of products, including electricity, liquid fuels such as methanol/ethanol, Hydrogen, and potentially diesel.

At the core of the S4 gasification process is a unique technology termed the PEM system. The PEM system was designed in collaboration with MIT, Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, and InEnTec.  The technology has more than $300M invested to date, and countless hours of operation on various hazardous wastes, as well as considerable testing on MSW and other non-hazardous waste.  A brief summary of the PEM system is below:

PEM™ systems provide a unique method of gasification for the conversion of waste into synthesis gas (syngas). The key to the PEM system’s advantage is in the energy efficiency and clean syngas production of the gasification process. Advantages include:
